How to make your home a safer place to live

Making your home a safer place to live can mean various things. It can mean making it safer inside or outside. At Storey Insurance in Senatobia, MS, we give our customers the information they need to decide on their home insurance coverage. We are independent insurance agents, which means we work for our customers and can offer more choices.

Use your door and window locks.

Homes come with door and window locks for a reason. The locks can’t protect you from everything, but they can offer a measure of security. Window locks are the ones that are most often neglected. If you want an open window, ensure it has a safety device that only allows it to be open 6 inches. This allows air in and keeps people out.

Keep your medication in a safe place.

If you are taking medication, whether prescription or OTC, make sure it is in a place where children or a confused older person can’t reach it, on a very high shelf, or where it can’t become an accidental poisoning issue. Even the most innocuous medication can be poisonous if taken in excess.

Remove clutter

Clutter can be a trip hazard, and trips are one of the top dangers for injury in the home. Don’t pile things in hallways and on stairs, and make sure that both of these areas have adequate lighting.

Avoid extension cords

You may not be able to avoid extension cords entirely, but if you must use them, ensure that you don’t run them across areas used as walkways. Tuck them behind furniture or use tape to keep them on the floor.
